# Gold or Silver: Which Metal Suits Your Season

> Warmth chooses the metal: Spring and Autumn look best in yellow gold, brass, copper and bronze; Summer and Winter in silver, white gold and platinum. Depth and clarity choose the finish and weight: high polish for clear colouring, brushed or antiqued for soft, fine pieces for light colouring and weightier ones for deep. Subtypes close to neutral can wear rose gold or mixed metals well.

## Warmth chooses the metal

Jewellery sits directly against your skin and reflects a little of its colour back onto it, so its temperature matters in the same way a colour near your face does.

- **Warm metals:** yellow gold, brass, copper, bronze, and rose gold, which is warm with a pink cast.
- **Cool metals:** silver, white gold, platinum, steel, pewter and dark gunmetal.

Warm seasons, Spring and Autumn, look best in the warm metals. Cool seasons, Summer and Winter, look best in the cool ones. When the metal matches your undertone, the skin around it looks even and the metal looks like part of you. When it works against you, gold can make cool skin look yellowish and sallow, and silver can make warm skin look grey and a little tired.

To test this at home, stand in daylight with a bare face and hold two pieces against your neck, one gold, one silver, of the same size and the same finish. The finish matters: a bright chain against a brushed bangle tests shine, not temperature. Our guide to [warm or cool undertone](https://colour-sense.com/en/guides/warm-or-cool-undertone) explains what else can mislead the jewellery test.

## Depth and clarity choose the finish

Once warmth has chosen the metal, your other two qualities decide how it should look.

**Clarity decides the finish.** Clear colouring, with bright eyes and sharp contrast between hair and skin, carries a high polish, faceted stones and some sparkle. A matte piece can look dull on it. Soft colouring, where features blend gently, looks best in brushed, satin, hammered or antiqued metal. A mirror polish on soft colouring looks hard, the way a vivid colour looks loud.

**Depth decides the weight and the shade.** Light colouring suits fine chains, small hoops and pale golds, and can be overpowered by a chunky cuff. Deep colouring holds its own with weightier pieces and darker metals: antique gold, bronze, oxidised silver, gunmetal. On deep colouring, very delicate pieces can disappear.

Put together, this is why two people who both "wear gold" can wear very different gold. A [Bright Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/bright-spring) wants it polished and shining; a [Soft Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/soft-autumn) wants it brushed and quiet.

## Rose gold, and where it belongs

Rose gold is gold alloyed with copper, which gives it a warm, pinkish cast and a lower contrast than yellow gold. It is the gentlest of the warm metals.

It suits colouring that is warm but light or soft, and colouring close to neutral. [Light Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/light-spring) and [Soft Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/soft-autumn) wear it best. A pale, pink rose gold also works for [Light Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/light-summer) and [Soft Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/soft-summer), whose coolness is gentle enough to take it, especially in a satin finish.

It is usually a weaker choice for the Winters, whose clarity and coolness want the sharpness of silver or platinum, and for [Warm Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/warm-autumn) and [Deep Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/deep-autumn), where copper does the same job with more depth.

## Mixing metals

Wearing gold and silver together is not a mistake, and for some subtypes it is an easy, flattering choice. A few rules keep it looking intended:

- Let one metal lead and use the other as an accent.
- Keep the finish consistent. Brushed gold with brushed silver looks planned; polished gold with antiqued silver looks accidental.
- Put the metal that suits you best closest to your face, in earrings and necklaces, and let the other appear on your wrist or hands.
- A two-tone piece, such as a watch or a ring that combines both, links the two metals.

Mixed metals suit the subtypes on the border between a warm and a cool season best: the Light, Soft, Deep and Bright pairs, whose warmth is the quieter of their qualities.

## Metals for each subtype

| Subtype | Best metals | Finish and weight |
|---|---|---|
| [Light Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/light-spring) | pale yellow gold, champagne gold, rose gold | polished, fine and delicate |
| [Warm Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/warm-spring) | warm yellow gold, brass, copper | polished, medium weight |
| [Bright Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/bright-spring) | bright yellow gold; polished silver as an accent | high polish, sparkle, stones |
| [Light Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/light-summer) | silver, white gold, platinum, pale rose gold | fine, satin or softly polished |
| [Cool Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/cool-summer) | silver, platinum, white gold, pewter | satin or softly polished |
| [Soft Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/soft-summer) | brushed silver, pewter, soft rose gold | brushed, matte, antiqued |
| [Soft Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/soft-autumn) | brushed gold, antique gold, rose gold, soft bronze | brushed or matte |
| [Warm Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/warm-autumn) | yellow gold, copper, bronze, brass | hammered or antique, substantial |
| [Deep Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/deep-autumn) | antique gold, bronze, copper; dark gunmetal as an accent | antiqued, weighty |
| [Deep Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/deep-winter) | silver, platinum, gunmetal, oxidised silver | polished, bold |
| [Cool Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/cool-winter) | bright silver, platinum, white gold | high polish |
| [Bright Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/bright-winter) | polished silver, platinum, white gold with sparkle | high polish, stones |

The accents in the table follow the wheel. Bright Spring borders [Bright Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/bright-winter), so a polished silver accent keeps the clarity both share; Deep Autumn borders [Deep Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/deep-winter), so a dark gunmetal works for the depth both share. Our guide to [the twelve seasons](https://colour-sense.com/en/guides/12-season-color-analysis) shows every pair of neighbours.

## Beyond jewellery: frames, watches and hardware

Metal turns up in more places than rings and earrings, and the same rules apply.

**Glasses frames** sit closer to your eyes than anything else you wear, so their metal counts most. Thin gold frames suit the Springs; brushed gold or bronze the Autumns; silver or gunmetal the Summers and Winters, polished for the Winters, satin for the Summers.

**Watches, belt buckles, zips, bag clasps and buttons** matter less, because they sit further from your face, but a coat with the right hardware looks more finished. On a cool grey coat, silver buttons belong; on a camel coat, horn or brass buttons do.

## When the metal you love is the wrong one

Wedding rings, heirlooms and a favourite watch often come in a metal chosen for other reasons. Wear them. Distance from the face softens the effect, so a gold ring on a Cool Winter's hand changes very little, while gold earrings beside the same face show at once.

If you want to wear the less flattering metal near your face, keep the piece small and let the finish help: a brushed or antiqued version sits more quietly than a polished one, and a piece in your better metal worn alongside it draws the two together. Make-up in your own palette helps as well, and our guide to [make-up by season](https://colour-sense.com/en/guides/makeup-by-season) goes through it season by season.

If you do not yet know your season, the [free colour test](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-test) is a short quiz in your browser that estimates it. The [personal colour analysis](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-analysis) determines your season and subtype from a few questions about your hair, eyes and skin and one to three photos taken in natural light, and its PDF report includes your accessories and metal tones alongside your colours, wardrobe, make-up and hair.

## Questions and answers

### How do I know if gold or silver suits me?

Hold a gold piece and a silver piece of the same size and finish against your neck in daylight, with a bare face. The metal that suits you makes your skin look even and your eyes brighter; the other makes the skin look grey or yellowish. Gold usually suits a warm undertone, silver a cool one.

### Who suits rose gold jewellery?

Rose gold is a warm metal softened with pink, so it suits colouring that is warm but gentle, or close to neutral: Light Spring and Soft Autumn above all, and a pale, pink rose gold also works for Light Summer and Soft Summer. It is usually too soft for the Winters and too light for the deeper Autumns.

### Can you mix gold and silver jewellery?

Yes. Let one metal lead and use the other as an accent, keep the finish the same across both, and wear the metal that suits you best closest to your face. Two-tone pieces make the link easier. Mixing suits the subtypes near the warm and cool border best, such as the Soft, Light, Deep and Bright subtypes.

### Is white gold warm or cool?

White gold reads as cool. It looks like silver or platinum against the skin, so it belongs with the cool seasons, Summer and Winter. A polished white gold suits the clear Winters; the softer Summers often look better in a satin or brushed finish.

### Which metal suits a neutral undertone?

A neutral undertone can usually wear both, so the finish matters more than the metal. Look at your other qualities: soft colouring suits brushed or antiqued metal, clear colouring suits polished, light colouring suits fine pieces and deep colouring weightier ones. Rose gold and two-tone pieces are easy choices while you work out which way you lean.
