# Wardrobe Neutrals by Season

> Every season has neutrals, just not the same ones. Winter wears black, snow white, ink navy and charcoal; Summer wears soft navy, cool grey, rose-taupe and soft white; Autumn wears camel, chocolate, olive and cream; Spring wears ivory, cream, light camel and a warm navy. Your subtype narrows it further: depth decides how dark you go, clarity how stark the contrast between two neutrals can be.

## Why neutrals matter more than accent colours

Neutrals are the biggest things you own: the coat, the suit, the trousers, the knit you wear three days a week. They sit at your collar as often as any colour does, and you wear them more often than anything else. A coral scarf that does not suit you is one bad day. A black coat that does not suit you is a whole winter.

A neutral is not neutral to your face. Every one of them carries the same three axes as any other colour. Black is the deepest and clearest there is; optical white is the lightest and clearest. Camel and cream lean warm, grey and navy lean cool, and taupe can go either way. So your neutrals follow your season just as your colours do: **warmth** decides the family, **depth** decides how dark you can go near your face, and **clarity** decides how stark the contrast between two neutrals worn together can be.

## Who wears which neutral

### Black

Black is at home in Winter. [Deep Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/deep-winter) and [Bright Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/bright-winter) wear it at full strength, and [Cool Winter](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/winter/cool-winter) nearly as well. [Deep Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/deep-autumn) is deep enough for black but warm, so a dark espresso brown (#3A2B1E), or black with a warm colour beside the face, looks richer on it. [Bright Spring](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/spring/bright-spring) can wear black in small, crisp doses, broken by clear colour at the neck. For everyone else, black near the face is too deep or too hard. It still works below the waist, in shoes and bags, or with a scarf from your palette between it and your face.

### White and snow white

White is the lightest, clearest neutral, so it belongs to the clear, cool colourings. Winters wear snow white (#EDEAE3) crisply, often right next to black. Bright Spring wears a clean white with a touch of warmth. Summers look better in a soft white with a trace of grey in it. Springs and Autumns wear ivory and cream instead: next to a warm or soft face, optical white glares, and the skin looks sallow beside it.

### Navy

Navy is the most forgiving dark neutral, and many people who cannot wear black can wear some navy. Winters wear the deepest ink navy (#222C4C). Summers wear a softer, greyed navy, and [Cool Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/cool-summer) has a slate blue (#6F7E9C) among its signature shades that does the same job more gently still. Springs wear a brighter, slightly warmer navy with some light in it. Autumns find navy the hardest; chocolate, deep olive or a deep teal usually does its work better.

### Grey

Grey is cool by nature and belongs to Summer and Winter. Summers wear it soft: dove grey, cool mid grey (#9AA0A6), pewter, and for Cool Summer and Soft Summer a soft charcoal. Winters wear it clean: charcoal as an alternative to black, and a pale, icy grey. Warm seasons do better with a grey that leans towards stone or greige. A flat mid grey drains a Spring and dulls an Autumn.

### Brown

Brown is Autumn's home neutral. All three Autumns wear chocolate (#5A3C2E); Deep Autumn goes darker, to espresso, Warm Autumn towards golden and copper browns, Soft Autumn towards softer mid browns. Springs wear lighter, golden browns: milk chocolate, tan, cinnamon. Summers wear brown only cool and muted, as cocoa or rose-brown; the muted cocoa (#B6A99A) in [Soft Summer](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/summer/soft-summer)'s palette is one. Winters wear brown only when it is cool and nearly black, as a dark espresso on a Deep Winter.

### Camel

Camel is warm, and it is the defining neutral of [Soft Autumn](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-types/autumn/soft-autumn), whose palette opens with a soft camel (#B9A07A). Warm Autumn wears a deeper, golden camel, and the Springs a lighter, brighter one. Near a Summer or a Winter face, camel turns the skin sallow. A Summer can use rose-beige or a cool taupe in its place; a Winter does better with charcoal or navy for the same coat.

### Cream and ivory

Cream (#F2E6D2) and ivory are the light neutrals of the warm seasons. Springs wear them clean and light; Autumns wear them a little deeper, towards oyster and oatmeal. They are the warm seasons' white: a cream shirt does for an Autumn what a white one does for a Winter. On Summers and Winters, cream tends to look faded and yellowish against the skin.

### Taupe

Taupe sits between grey and brown and can swing either way. Warm taupe, the brown-beige in Soft Autumn's palette, belongs to Autumn. Cool rose-taupe and mushroom belong to Summer, above all to Soft Summer. Winters rarely need taupe; when they do, a dark, greyed one. Because taupe is soft, it is the most forgiving of the light-to-mid neutrals: a natural base for the soft subtypes, and too quiet on its own for the clear ones.

## Building a capsule around your neutrals

A small wardrobe works when everything in it shares the same warmth, so every piece goes with every other. Build it in this order.

1. **One dark neutral** for the pieces that last longest: coat, trousers, suit, bag. Black or ink navy for a Winter, soft navy or charcoal for a Summer, chocolate or dark olive for an Autumn, a warm navy or milk chocolate for a Spring.
2. **One light neutral** for what touches your face: shirts, T-shirts, knitwear. Snow white for a Winter, soft white for a Summer, cream for an Autumn, ivory for a Spring.
3. **One mid neutral** to link the two, if you want it: grey, camel or taupe, in your family.
4. **Accent colours from your palette**, worn near the face: cherry and icy turquoise for a Winter, dusty rose and powder blue for a Summer, terracotta and olive for an Autumn, coral and fresh green for a Spring.

Then match the contrast of your outfits to your own. Clear subtypes can put their darkest and lightest neutrals side by side, black with snow white on a Bright Winter, and look finished. Soft subtypes look better pairing neighbours: taupe with camel, pewter with soft navy. Light subtypes keep the outfit mostly in the light half of their neutrals, with the dark one lower down, in trousers or shoes. Metals follow the same warmth as your neutrals; [Gold or Silver](https://colour-sense.com/en/guides/gold-or-silver-jewelry) takes that season by season.

## When your wardrobe is full of the wrong neutral

Most people find out their season with a wardrobe already full. The common case is black: a black coat, black knitwear, black everything, on a Summer, a Spring or a Soft Autumn. You do not need to clear it out.

Put your own colour between the black and your face: a scarf from your palette, a soft white or cream shirt at an open collar, earrings in your metal. Move black down the body, where it matters least; black trousers work against you far less than a black jumper. When something wears out, replace it with the neutral that suits you, and the wardrobe turns over on its own within a few seasons. A black jumper will not become your colour, but it can stop working against you. The same goes for the belief that one colour is forbidden for good; [Colour Analysis Myths](https://colour-sense.com/en/guides/color-analysis-myths) takes that one apart.

If you are not sure which neutrals are yours, start with your season: the [free colour test](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-test) is a short quiz in your browser that estimates it. The [personal colour analysis](https://colour-sense.com/en/color-analysis) works from a few questions about your hair, eyes and skin and one to three photos taken in natural light; it determines your season and subtype, and its PDF report covers your recommended colours, the colours to avoid, wardrobe and style, and accessories and metal tones.

## Questions and answers

### Which colour seasons can wear black?

Black suits the Winter subtypes best: Deep Winter and Bright Winter wear it at full strength, and Cool Winter nearly as well. Deep Autumn and Bright Spring can wear it in part, with warm or clear colour near the face. For the other subtypes, black works best away from the face, in trousers, shoes and bags.

### Is navy a good alternative to black?

For many people, yes. Navy is softer than black, so Summers and Springs can often wear it where black is too hard. Choose the navy of your season: a deep ink navy for Winter, a softer, greyed navy for Summer, a brighter and slightly warmer navy for Spring. Autumns usually do better with chocolate or deep olive in the same role.

### Should I wear white or cream?

Cool colourings wear white: snow white for Winter, a soft, slightly grey white for Summer. Warm colourings wear cream and ivory: light and clean for Spring, deeper towards oatmeal for Autumn. To check, hold both against your face in daylight. The wrong one makes your skin look sallow or grey; the right one makes it look clearer.

### Is grey a warm or cool neutral?

Most greys are cool, which is why grey belongs to Summer and Winter: dove grey and pewter for Summers, charcoal and icy grey for Winters. Warm seasons can still wear grey if it leans towards stone or greige, a grey with some beige in it. A flat mid grey tends to drain a Spring and dull an Autumn.

### How many neutrals do I need for a capsule wardrobe?

Two or three are enough: a dark neutral for coats, trousers and bags, a light one for what sits near your face, and perhaps a mid neutral that links them. Chosen from your season, they go with each other and with the accent colours of your palette, so the wardrobe stays small without looking repetitive.
